Where Does TrenchBroom Store Config and Game Files?

TrenchBroom user data folder on Windows, Mac and Linux, and the folder icon shortcut that opens it.

Last updated

TrenchBroom keeps user data in a platform standard folder: Roaming AppData on Windows, Application Support on macOS, and a dot folder in home on Linux. Game configurations, preferences and custom resources all live there, separate from the built in game definitions shipped with the app.

Linux users should mind the capital letters. The folder is ~/.TrenchBroom with a capital T and B, and the lowercase variant some old guides quote simply does not exist. When in doubt, the folder icon in Preferences opens whatever path your build actually uses.

Where TrenchBroom stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\TrenchBroom

Holds game configs and preferences. Built in game definitions live instead beside the executable. The folder icon near the bottom left of Preferences opens this directory directly.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/TrenchBroom

Same role as on Windows, holding your game configs apart from the app bundle resources. Reaching it through the in app folder icon avoids unhiding Library by hand.

Linux
~/.TrenchBroom

Capital T and capital B. Older documentation quoting ~/.trenchbroom in lowercase is wrong on case sensitive filesystems, which caused real confusion in the issue tracker.

Frequently asked questions

how do i open the trenchbroom data folder

Click the folder icon at the bottom left of the Preferences window. That opens the effective user data path on any platform, which settles installed versus portable questions instantly.

how do i migrate trenchbroom to a new pc

Copy your game configs and custom files from the old data folder into the new one with TrenchBroom closed. Game paths pointing at Steam libraries may need re pointing if your Steam folder moved too.
