Where Does TurboTax Desktop Save Tax Returns?
TurboTax Desktop saves returns as .taxYYYY files in Documents\TurboTax on Windows (~/Documents/TurboTax on Mac), with PDFs beside them. Online editions keep everything in your account instead.

Desktop TurboTax keeps your return in a data file per year with an extension like .tax2025. The default home is the TurboTax folder inside Documents, for both the data file and any PDFs you saved. The save dialog shows the real location when it differs, so glance at it before assuming.
Two gotchas dominate support threads. Online TurboTax stores nothing on your PC, so Documents searches find only PDFs you downloaded. And each data file opens solely in its own year edition, which matters most during computer moves when old installers are gone.
Where TurboTax Desktop stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\TurboTax
Default for .taxYYYY data files and saved PDFs. Search *.tax* drive wide when missing. Online edition users will not find data files here since those live in the Intuit account.
~/Documents/TurboTax
Same default folder name as Windows. Find files with Spotlight or Finder search for .tax. Year matched installers are required to open each file.
Frequently asked questions
Where is my TurboTax data file?
Search the drive for *.tax* to catch every year at once. Intuit documents this exact search from the No Company Open style finder. Check dates to pick the current file when several years appear.
Why will my .tax file not open?
Install the matching year release first. A 2025 file needs TurboTax 2025 and will not open in 2024 or 2026. Keep old installers or finish transfers before uninstalling last year's edition.
