Where Does Ungoogled Chromium Store Profiles?

Where Ungoogled Chromium keeps profiles and which files to back up.

Last updated

Ungoogled Chromium uses stock Chromium profile paths, which confuses people expecting a custom folder. Windows defaults to LocalAppData Chromium User Data, macOS to Application Support Chromium and Linux to ~/.config/chromium. Profiles sit inside as Default and Profile N.

The project documents --user-data-dir plus --disable-machine-id and --disable-encryption for portable setups. Confirm the live path at chrome://version before copying, since flags and wrappers override defaults silently.

Where Ungoogled Chromium stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Chromium\User Data\

Stock Chromium User Data root with Default and numbered profiles. Back up Preferences, Bookmarks, Login Data and Local State for lean restores. Check chrome://version since --user-data-dir overrides it.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Chromium/

Same Chromium layout under Application Support. macOS discussion threads confirm settings live here and not in a vendor folder. Close all Chromium builds before copying to dodge locked files.

Linux
~/.config/chromium/

Default profile path unless wrappers pass --user-data-dir elsewhere (some use ~/.config/ungoogled-chromium). Cache splits to ~/.cache. Export passwords separately since encryption keys stay machine bound.

Frequently asked questions

Which files do I actually need to back up?

Copy Preferences, Bookmarks, Login Data and Local State from the Default profile plus the profile folder itself. Those five cover settings, bookmarks and logins for most restores without dragging gigabytes of cache.

How do I run Ungoogled Chromium portably?

Pass --user-data-dir pointing at an empty folder. Note Crashpad can still drop a folder under LocalAppData on Windows, so check there if you expected full portability.
