Where Are Unpacking Save Files Located?
Unpacking .sav files on Windows and Linux, the Steam Cloud mirror, and why Steam and GOG saves refuse to mix.
Last updated
Unpacking stores progress as .sav files in LocalLow under a Witch Beam folder on Windows, with Steam Cloud mirroring them under userdata for AppID 1135690. Linux uses the Unity config home path instead, same interior.
Steam and GOG saves are incompatible, so cross store transfers fail even though the files look identical. Settings live in the registry under the Witch Beam key rather than beside the saves. Copy the whole Unpacking folder with the game closed for backups.
Where Unpacking stores this, by platform
%userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\Witch Beam\Unpacking
Progress as .sav files inside. Steam mirrors to userdata\1135690\remote. Settings sit in HKCU\Software\Witch Beam\Unpacking in the registry. GOG saves will not load here.
~/.config/unity3d/Witch Beam/Unpacking
Unity config home layout, same files as Windows. Respects XDG_CONFIG_HOME if set. Transfer to Windows works within the same store only.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move an Unpacking save from GOG to Steam?
No. The two builds use incompatible save formats despite identical file names. A copied file either errors or loads empty, so finish the run on its original store.
Where are Unpacking settings stored?
On Windows they live in the registry at HKCU\Software\Witch Beam\Unpacking, not beside the saves. Export that key if a full settings backup matters to you.
