Where Does Vanilla OS Store ABRoot and APX Data?

Vanilla OS keeps ABRoot config in /etc and per user state plus APX toolboxes under your home directory.

Last updated

Vanilla OS splits immutable system state from user tooling. ABRoot reads a JSON config with a clear priority: user config beats /etc, which beats the shipped default. System wide defaults sit in /etc while per user overrides live in the home tree. Kernel args stay apart and change through the CLI rather than by hand edit.

APX keeps containers and stacks under your XDG data home, usually ~/.local/share/apx. Legacy installs may still show apx.json instead of config.json. Check both names before assuming a fresh install wiped your boxes. Exported binaries link from the local bin path. Back the whole APX folder up to keep toolboxes, stacks and managers together.

Where Vanilla OS stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/abroot/abroot.json

ABRoot priority order: user file, then /etc, then shipped default. Kernel args in /etc/default/abroot_kargs via the abroot CLI. APX toolboxes under ~/.local/share/apx.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the ABRoot config file?

Edit /etc/abroot/abroot.json for system wide defaults, or ~/.config/abroot/abroot.json for your user override. Kernel args live separately and change through sudo abroot kargs edit, not by hand.

Where are APX toolboxes stored?

Look under ~/.local/share/apx for storage, stacks and package managers. The config.json there points at your toolboxes. Exported binaries link from ~/.local/bin. Back up the whole apx folder to keep toolboxes.
