Where Does VictoriaMetrics Store Data?

VictoriaMetrics storage data path flag and snapshot folder for single node server installs on Linux.

Last updated

VictoriaMetrics keeps all series data under one folder set by -storageDataPath. Binary runs default to ./victoria-metrics-data next to the working directory. Package installs and Docker override it to paths like /var/lib/victoria-metrics with proper ownership.

Snapshots land in a snapshots subfolder inside the data root. Config is flags rather than a file, so the systemd unit or compose file is the config to keep. Back up snapshots with those launch files. The data folder alone restores series, the flags restore behavior.

Where VictoriaMetrics stores this, by platform

Linux
/var/lib/victoria-metrics

Common package override with data, indexdb, and snapshots inside. Check the unit file when missing, since the flag overrides everything. Copy snapshots off host for backups.

Linux
/etc/systemd/system/victoriametrics.service

Flag driven config in the service file or compose command. Holds retention, storage path, and listen addresses. Keep with snapshot backups for full restore.

Frequently asked questions

where is my VictoriaMetrics data folder

Check the -storageDataPath flag in the systemd unit or compose file. Binary defaults to ./victoria-metrics-data in the working directory. Packages commonly override it to /var/lib/victoria-metrics.

how do i back up VictoriaMetrics without downtime

Call the snapshot API to create a snapshot under snapshots in the data folder, then copy it off the host. Snapshots are crash consistent without stopping the server. Delete old ones after copying.
