Where Does Wagtail Store Uploads?

Wagtail stores uploads in the media folder and content in Django database. Settings live in base.py file.

Last updated

Wagtail is Django based. Page content lives in Postgres, MySQL, or SQLite depending on project settings. Uploaded files live under media in the project root. Code and settings live beside it.

Settings in mysite/settings/base.py define database, media root, and static paths. For backup you need the database dump plus media plus settings. Static files can be recollected. Recollect static files after restore, since only media and the database carry site content across hosts. Check media serving after restore, since wrong MEDIA_ROOT paths return 404 for older uploads.

Where Wagtail stores this, by platform

Linux
/opt/wagtail/mysite/media

Uploaded images and documents. Path comes from MEDIA_ROOT. Copy recursively and keep web server write access.

Linux
/opt/wagtail/mysite/settings/base.py

Database, media root, and installed apps. Back up with the database dump. Check it for custom media paths.
