Where Are Wallpaper Engine Files Stored?

Wallpaper Engine stores Steam Workshop downloads under the Steam workshop content folder and stores user projects under the app install folder. Both locations sit inside the Steam library on Windows.

Last updated

Subscribed Workshop wallpapers are managed by Steam and placed in a numbered content folder. Personal projects created in the editor live under the Wallpaper Engine install folder.

Library location matters. If Steam uses a custom library folder, replace the Steam part of the path with that library root.

Where Wallpaper Engine stores this, by platform

Windows
<Steam>\steamapps\workshop\content\431960\<workshopid>

<Steam> is the Steam library root, for example C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam. 431960 is the Wallpaper Engine Steam app ID. <workshopid> is the numeric Workshop item ID seen on the Workshop page.

Windows
<Steam>\steamapps\common\wallpaper_engine\projects\<projectname>

<Steam> is the Steam library root. <projectname> is the folder name shown in the Wallpaper Engine editor. Each project folder holds project.json plus video, image, or web assets.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up a Workshop wallpaper?

Copy the numeric <workshopid> folder for that item. On restore, place it back under the 431960 folder while Steam is closed, then verify the subscription in Steam.

Why does my Steam path look different?

Steam supports multiple library folders. Right click Wallpaper Engine in Steam, open Properties and Installed Files, then use the shown library path as <Steam>.
