Where Are Mount & Blade: Warband Save Files Located?

Where Warband keeps single player saves, multiplayer profiles, and config on Windows and Linux.

Last updated

Warband keeps saves in a plainly named folder: Documents\Mount&Blade Warband Savegames, one .sav per character with .bak backups beside them. Settings live one level up in Documents\Mount&Blade Warband as rgl_config.txt.

The layout predates every modern convention and that is its virtue. No hidden AppData, no Steam IDs in the path, no cloud mystery. Copy two Documents folders and the entire state of Calradia moves with you, mods apart. Floris and Diplomacy keep their own module saves, which need separate copies.

Where Mount & Blade: Warband stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Mount&Blade Warband Savegames

Characters/ holds one .sav per hero plus rotating .bak files. Copy the folder with the game closed; mid session copies can split a save from its backup. Steam Cloud syncs part of this, but the manual copy is complete.

Linux
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/48700/pfx/.../Mount&Blade Warband Savegames

Same Documents relative path inside the Proton prefix. If the prefix tree looks empty, confirm which compatibility tool the install uses, since native depot files land in the home folder instead.

Frequently asked questions

how do i back up warband saves

Copy the whole Characters folder from Documents\Mount&Blade Warband Savegames to the same path on the new PC. Each character is a .sav file plus a .bak backup the game maintains. Config lives separately in Documents\Mount&Blade Warband, so grab that folder too.

where is the warband config file

In Documents\Mount&Blade Warband as rgl_config.txt (graphics and keys). The Bannerlord era launcher does not apply here; this text file is the whole settings UI. Delete it to force the game to regenerate defaults.

where are warband saves on linux

Under the same Documents relative tree inside the Proton prefix. Saves copy cleanly between Windows and Proton. Native Linux builds from the depot use ~/.local/share/Mount&Blade Warband Savegames in some installs, so check both.
