Where Is the wayfire Config File?

wayfire reads wayfire.ini from the wayfire config folder. Plugins, bindings, and outputs split into INI sections.

Last updated

wayfire configures through one INI file under the XDG config home. Core behavior plus each plugin gets its own section with key value pairs. Outputs, input devices, and animations all live there.

The graphical configurator edits the same file, which keeps GUI and hand edits interchangeable. Plugin availability depends on the build, so a config referencing missing plugins logs warnings instead of failing. Output layouts persist per connector name. Autostart helpers launch from the session, not the ini file itself.

Where wayfire stores this, by platform

Linux
/home/<username>/.config/wayfire/wayfire.ini

Main config in INI form. Core plus per plugin sections. Restart the session after edits.

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply wayfire changes?

Edit wayfire.ini and restart the session. The file parses at startup, so changes need a fresh login to apply.

How do I migrate wayfire settings?

Copy the wayfire config folder to the new machine. Plugin list and bindings travel together. Installed plugins must exist there too.
