Where Does Wear OS Store Watch Backups?
Wear OS 4 and later backs watches to your Google account in the cloud. Manage it in the Pixel Watch app or the watch settings.
Last updated
Wear OS backups are invisible by design. On watches running Wear OS 4 or higher, app data, settings, faces, and tiles upload to a private folder in your Google Drive account, capped per app. There is no file to copy, and the 25 MB per-app limit keeps most watches well under quota.
Pixel Watches use the Pixel Watch app and Play Services for this. Samsung and OnePlus took a different road: their watches back up through Galaxy Wearable and OHealth instead. Check which companion app your watch uses before resetting anything, since the wrong app shows no backup at all.
Where Wear OS stores this, by platform
Google Drive > hidden app data (Wear OS backup)
Hidden app data in Google Drive, not browsable. Pixel Watch app > Google Backup shows status. Galaxy and OnePlus watches use their own companion apps, and Wear OS 3.5 and older have no cloud backup.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up my Wear OS watch?
On the watch, open Settings, then System, then Backup, and turn it on. On the phone, open the Pixel Watch app and enable Google backup. Leave the watch on its charger with WiFi for a few days before a move, since the first backup is slow.
Can I restore a backup onto a new watch?
Yes to a new watch of the same platform family. Pair the new watch in the companion app and pick the backup when prompted. Galaxy and OnePlus watches back up through their own companion apps instead of the Pixel Watch app, so keep the matching phone app installed.
