Where Does WeeWX Store Config and Weather Data?

WeeWX keeps its config in /etc/weewx/weewx.conf, observations in /var/lib/weewx/weewx.sdb, skins in /etc/weewx/skins, and generated reports under /var/www/html/weewx.

Last updated

WeeWX splits station software into config, database, skins, and output. The config file names the station hardware and upload targets. The SQLite database accumulates every observation the station reports. Skins turn records into web pages on a schedule.

That four way split makes troubleshooting directional. Missing data means checking the database and driver first. Ugly or missing pages mean skins and HTML_ROOT. Upload failures live in the config station sections. Each symptom maps to one folder.

Where WeeWX stores this, by platform

Linux
/etc/weewx/weewx.conf

Main config for station, database, and skin choices. Edit then restart the service. HTML_ROOT inside decides the website location.

Linux
/var/lib/weewx/weewx.sdb

SQLite history of all observations. Back up with service stopped. Skins beside the config render it to HTML.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up WeeWX?

Copy /etc/weewx/weewx.conf and /var/lib/weewx/weewx.sdb together with the service stopped. The database holds history while the config holds station and skin choices. Skins customizations in /etc/weewx/skins ride along.

Where does WeeWX publish its website?

Point the HTML_ROOT option in weewx.conf at your web directory and restart the service. Generated pages land there on each archive interval. Skin selection decides which pages exist at all.
