Where Are Well Dweller Save Files Located?

Well Dweller keeps numbered save slots, a Settings file, and automatic BACKUP copies together in one folder under AppData Local.

Last updated

Kyle Thompson's dark fairy-tale metroidvania launched in September 2026 and sits in the Overwhelmingly Positive range on Steam. Everything it writes locally lives in one folder, WellDweller, directly under AppData\Local.

Inside are numbered slots like WellDweller1, a Settings file, and BACKUP_ prefixed copies of each slot. A launch-window bug could zero out a save, and the developer's own recovery steps lean on those backups, so it pays to leave them alone. This folder is also the first place to look when the game claims it cannot save at all.

Where Well Dweller stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\WellDweller

Numbered slots, BACKUP_ copies, and the Settings file sit here as plain files. The developer's corruption recovery steps work directly on this folder.

Linux
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/WellDweller/

The Linux version stores saves under the config home, which is unusual for game saves. With no XDG_CONFIG_HOME set, this resolves to ~/.config/WellDweller.

Frequently asked questions

Where are Well Dweller save files?

In %LOCALAPPDATA%\WellDweller. Paste that into Explorer's address bar and you will see numbered slot files, their BACKUP_ twins, and a Settings file.

My save is corrupt. Can I recover it?

Yes, if the backup is intact. Delete the Settings file first, then rename the matching BACKUP_ file to the slot's exact name, so BACKUP_WellDweller1 becomes WellDweller1, and relaunch.

The game says there is no save at all

Check that the WellDweller folder exists at all. A documented cause was Steam lacking permission to create it; the developer's suggested fix was running Steam as administrator once, then launching normally.
