Where Does WhatsApp Desktop Save Files?

Where WhatsApp Desktop keeps received photos, PDFs and voice notes on Windows and Mac, and how to save a copy somewhere you can actually find.

Last updated

WhatsApp Desktop does not behave like the phone app. A photo, PDF or voice note you receive does not turn up in Downloads or Pictures. The app pulls it into a private data folder and shows it from there, so the only files you can browse in Explorer or Finder are the ones you deliberately save.

That split decides everything below. The internal copy of anything you have opened sits in a hidden folder that has moved twice, most recently in November 2025 when WhatsApp replaced its native Windows app with a web wrapper. Files you export with Save as or Download follow your normal Downloads rules instead, and there is no setting that moves the private folder.

Where WhatsApp stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Packages\5319275A.WhatsAppDesktop_cv1g1gvanyjgm\LocalState\

Open LocalState and look in two places: sessions\[long hex ID]\transfers, which is where the current WebView2 build (rolled out from 5 November 2025) puts opened and downloaded files, and shared\transfers, the old native app's folder with subfolders named by year. The package folder is usually 5319275A.WhatsAppDesktop_cv1g1gvanyjgm but the suffix can differ, so match on the 5319275A prefix. Older Store builds kept Electron data at LocalCache\Roaming\WhatsApp instead. The standalone .exe installer is no longer offered (whatsapp.com now redirects to the Microsoft Store), but installs from before that keep their data in %APPDATA%\WhatsApp with the program itself in %LOCALAPPDATA%\WhatsApp. Auto-download is toggled under Settings (gear icon, bottom left) > Storage > Automatic Downloads; explicitly saved files go to Downloads or the folder you pick in the Save as dialog.

macOS
~/Library/Group Containers/group.net.whatsapp.WhatsApp.shared/Message/Media/

Library is hidden, so reach it with Finder > Go > Go to Folder. Media sits in a subfolder per conversation named after the phone number, with hash-style filenames but normal extensions, so the files open fine in Preview and any other app. New media is copied into ~/Downloads when Settings > Chats > Save to Downloads is ticked, and there is a per-chat version of the same option in the contact info screen. Some guides give ~/Library/Containers/WhatsApp/Data/Library/Application Support/WhatsApp/Media instead; that is the older layout. Do not delete ChatStorage.sqlite in the folder above it, that is the message database.

Frequently asked questions

where does whatsapp desktop save downloaded files

Only files you save with Save as or Download leave the app: they go to your Downloads folder or wherever the save dialog points. Files the app merely opened stay inside its private transfers folder under the Store package path, and the older native build sorts those into year subfolders.

why cant i find the pdf i opened from whatsapp on my pc

Opening a file is not saving it. The copy the app used sits under LocalState, in sessions\[hex ID]\transfers on current builds, and it can be cleared during an update or logout. Right-click the attachment in the chat and choose Save as to keep a permanent copy in a folder you control.

does whatsapp desktop need my phone to be online

No. After linking, the desktop app keeps its own local copy of your chats and works with the phone offline. The catch is that the November 2025 update forced everyone to re-link, and only up to a year of history syncs back from the phone afterwards.
