Where Does Whoogle Store Config?
Whoogle keeps settings in app config.py plus environment vars. It stores no search index on local disk.
Last updated
Whoogle is stateless. It proxies queries upstream and returns filtered results. There is no index folder or user database to back up. That surprises people coming from YaCy or SearXNG.
What persists is config. The app/config.py file sets defaults, and environment variables or a compose env file override them. To move hosts, copy the compose file and env file. Nothing else is needed. Keep the compose file and env file together, since port and feature flags only apply as a pair on startup. Restart the container after env edits, since Whoogle only reads settings once at startup time.
Where Whoogle Search stores this, by platform
/app/app/config.py (Whoogle app directory)
Default settings for language, theme, and upstream. Override with env vars in Docker. Back up the compose env file instead of editing this directly.
./.env (Whoogle compose directory)
Compose overrides for port, user, and feature flags. Lives beside docker-compose.yml. This is the file to copy on migration.
Frequently asked questions
how do i back up whoogle settings
Settings come from app/config.py and environment variables. Copy your compose env file or Docker run flags. There is no user data folder to migrate. Store the compose folder in git for change history.
where does whoogle store search history
No. Whoogle proxies to upstream search and holds no history on disk by default. Restarting the container clears in memory state. Only config files persist.
