Where Is the Windows.old Folder and Can I Delete It?

Windows.old previous install backup after upgrades, what it holds, and the safe Disk Cleanup removal.

Last updated

After a feature upgrade, Windows keeps the old install as C:\Windows.old for about ten days of rollback room. User files, Program Files and the old Windows tree all sit inside.

Need a file from before? Dig it out of Windows.old/Users first. Past the rollback window, Disk Cleanup with Previous Windows installations ticked removes it properly.

Where Windows stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Windows.old

Needs admin to browse. Never delete by Shift+Delete; permissions break halfway. Use Settings, System, Storage, Temporary files instead.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Windows.old stick around?

Roughly ten days, then automatic cleanup removes it. The rollback option in Recovery vanishes with it.

Can I recover files from Windows.old?

Yes while it exists: copy from its Users tree to your live profile. Do that before any cleanup pass.
