Where Does Windows Store Snap Layouts Settings?

Where Windows keeps Snap Layouts preferences and snap groups, and the Settings page that controls them.

Last updated

Snap Layouts are window manager state, not documents. The on/off toggles and assist options live under Settings, System, Multitasking. The remembered groups and layout cache persist in Explorer registry state beside them.

Manage through Settings. Direct registry edits can work, but keys move between Windows 11 builds and a wrong edit blanks snapping. If layouts vanish after an update, recheck the Multitasking toggles before touching the registry.

Where Windows stores this, by platform

Windows
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Multitasking toggles for Snap windows and layouts plus remembered groups. Registry mirrors the state under Explorer Advanced and MultitaskingView, but keys vary by build so prefer Settings.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn Snap Layouts on or off?

Open Settings, System, Multitasking. Toggles for Snap windows, Snap layouts and remembered snap groups live there. Registry edits work but the Settings page is safer across builds.

Where did my snap groups go after an update?

Snap groups remember recently snapped app pairs for Task View and Alt Tab. They rebuild as you snap new pairs. Clearing them is a side effect of toggling the snap assists, not a separate file to delete.
