Where Does the Xbox App Install PC Games?

Where the Xbox PC app installs Game Pass games, how to change the folder, and the old WindowsApps fallback.

Last updated

The Xbox PC app installs Game Pass games into a folder you choose, defaulting to an XboxGames directory on the picked drive. Changing the default in Settings moves existing installs along with future ones. One folder per drive keeps the layout predictable.

Older or restricted titles still use the locked WindowsApps tree from the Store era. That split explains conflicting guides: new installs are browsable, legacy ones are not. Publisher packaging decides per game, and the Manage window shows which treatment yours got.

Where Xbox (PC) stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\XboxGames

User-chosen default set in Xbox app Settings under General, one folder per drive. Changing it relocates existing installs automatically. Restricted titles fall back to WindowsApps. Find any game exe through Task Manager command line column when lost.

Frequently asked questions

how do I change the Xbox install folder

Open the Xbox app, click your profile, then Settings and General. Under Game install options, change the default folder, which also moves existing installs. Older titles without advanced management stay in WindowsApps instead.

can I browse Xbox game files

Right-click the game in the Xbox app sidebar and choose Manage, then enable advanced features on the General tab. Newer titles support open folders; publisher packaging blocks the rest. One folder per drive is the limit, like Steam libraries.

why do guides show different Xbox paths

The default moved from locked WindowsApps to user-chosen folders such as C:\XboxGames. Legacy installs and restricted titles still sit in WindowsApps with TrustedInstaller protection. Check the app settings first when a path from old guides does not exist.
