Where Does YADM Store Its Repo and Config?

YADM keeps its git repo and settings in .config/yadm and encrypted archives in .local/share/yadm.

Last updated

YADM follows the XDG spec since version 3. Config lives in ~/.config/yadm (config file, encrypt list, bootstrap script, alt files). Data lives in ~/.local/share/yadm (the bare repo.git plus the encrypted archive). The working copy is your entire home directory, which is the point of the tool.

Version 2 used ~/.yadm for everything, so old guides point there. The upgrade command migrates to the split layout. Do not track the encrypt list file itself in a way that leaks patterns; add filenames to encrypt, then commit only the archive.

Where YADM stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/yadm

config, encrypt, bootstrap, alt/ here; bare repo.git and archive under ~/.local/share/yadm. --yadm-dir and friends override per piece.

macOS
~/.config/yadm

Same XDG layout as Linux. Legacy ~/.yadm migrates via yadm upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

I upgraded and my repo vanished from ~/.yadm. Where is it?

Run yadm upgrade. It moves the repo and configs from ~/.yadm to the XDG locations and re-initializes submodules, which break in the move if left alone.

Where is the actual git repository?

At ~/.local/share/yadm/repo.git (a bare repo), with encrypted archives beside it. The config file, encrypt list, and bootstrap live in ~/.config/yadm. Override any piece with --yadm-dir, --yadm-data, --yadm-repo, or --yadm-config.
