Where Does ZoneMinder Store Events and Config?

ZoneMinder keeps events on disk under its events path with metadata in MySQL, configured in zoneminder.conf.

Last updated

ZoneMinder splits recordings from their index. Video frames and images land in the events directory while MySQL holds timestamps, zones and settings. One without the other is useless.

Paths vary by distro package, so check the web console options page for the effective directories. The config file points at the database, and the database points at the events.

Where ZoneMinder stores this, by platform

Linux
/var/cache/zoneminder/events

Recorded event files, often symlinked from the web tree. Database credentials sit in /etc/zm/zoneminder.conf. Back up events plus a MySQL dump together.

Frequently asked questions

how do i back up zoneminder

Copy the events directory and dump the zm MySQL database with the system stopped. Config in /etc/zm completes the set for a full restore.

why is zoneminder using so much disk

Events accumulate per camera per motion trigger. Set filters to delete old events automatically, and check the events path for orphaned runs after crashes.

where is the zoneminder config file

At /etc/zm/zoneminder.conf on most packages, holding database credentials and paths. Editable options also surface in the web console, which writes back to the database.
