Where Does ZynAddSubFX Store Config and Banks?

ZynAddSubFX config file, user banks and system presets on Linux and Windows.

Last updated

ZynAddSubFX keeps one XML config file straight in the home directory. Banks resolve through an ordered root list starting at ~/banks and falling through to system share dirs.

User instruments save anywhere through the File menu as .xmz, .xiz or .xpz. No history file exists. Windows installs default under Program Files with writes landing in the VirtualStore without admin rights.

Where ZynAddSubFX stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.zynaddsubfxXML.cfg

Single XML config file in home, not a folder. User banks default under ~/banks with system fallbacks in share dirs. Presets follow the same waterfall. Exported instruments save anywhere as .xmz, .xiz or .xpz.

Windows
C:\Program Files\ZynAddSubFX\banks

Default install banks. Writes without admin rights redirect to the VirtualStore mirror. Config filename follows the same home based rule, so prefer the Linux path pattern for migration.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up ZynAddSubFX?

Copy the .zynaddsubfxXML.cfg file and your bank folders with the synth closed. Restoring means putting both back and confirming the bank roots still resolve. Keep exported .xmz files too when single patches matter.

Where is the .zynaddsubfx folder?

There is none. The config is a single file directly in home, not a folder. Guides naming a .zynaddsubfx directory describe something that does not exist.
