Where Does the adw-gtk3 Theme Install?
adw-gtk3 installs into the user or system themes folder, with Flatpak copies as separate theme packages.
Last updated
adw-gtk3 is just files in a themes folder: extract the tarball to ~/.local/share/themes/ (single user) or /usr/share/themes/ (system), never both. Flatpak apps need the matching org.gtk.Gtk3theme packages or a filesystem override to see it.
That plain layout makes cleanup trivial and explains theme pickers showing doubles (same theme installed in two locations). GTK4 coverage needs the extra manual stylesheet step; out of the box only GTK3 is themed.

~/.local/share/themes/adw-gtk3
adw-gtk3 and adw-gtk3-dark subfolders. Flatpak: install org.gtk.Gtk3theme.adw-gtk3 packages or override --filesystem to the themes dir. One location only.
Frequently asked questions
How do I fully uninstall adw-gtk3?
Delete ~/.local/share/themes/adw-gtk3* (or sudo rm the /usr/share copy, plus flatpak uninstall the org.gtk.Gtk3theme packages). Then reselect a stock theme so apps stop referencing the gone files.
Does adw-gtk3 theme non-libadwaita GTK4 apps too?
Copy the CSS from the built stylesheet into ~/.local/share/themes/adw-gtk3/gtk-4.0 (renaming base.css to gtk.css) and grant flatpaks access to the themes dir. The GTK4 port is manual, unlike the GTK3 side.
