Where Do AirDrop Files Go on iPhone and Mac?

AirDrop files land in different spots by type and platform: Photos on iPhone, Downloads on Mac. Full routing rules.

Last updated

AirDrop has no save dialog, so every file type has a fixed destination. On iPhone and iPad, photos and videos go to Photos; everything else goes to the Files app under Downloads. On Mac, all incoming files land in Downloads regardless of type. Learn the routing and lost transfers stop being lost.

The Photos-versus-Files split causes most confusion: an airdropped photo never appears in Files on iOS, which reads as a failed transfer. Macs are simpler with the single Downloads destination, adjustable nowhere. Visibility settings (Contacts Only versus Everyone) decide whether devices see each other at all, a separate issue from where files land.

Where AirDrop stores this, by platform

iOS
Files/Downloads

Photos and videos route to Photos; all other files route to Files under Downloads (iCloud Drive Downloads when synced). No save dialog exists on iOS. If a transfer seems missing, check Photos first for media and Files second for documents.

macOS
~/Downloads

All incoming AirDrop files land here regardless of type, unlike iOS which splits media to Photos. No per-transfer destination choice exists. Rename on receipt when names collide with existing downloads.

Frequently asked questions

can i choose where airdrop saves files

Yes, on the receiving Mac: files land in Downloads with no prompt to choose. On iPhone, photos still go to Photos while other files go to Files, Downloads. The receiving side decides; the sender only picks the device. Rename after receipt if the names collide.

why is my airdropped photo not in files

Photos and videos always route to the Photos app on iPhone and iPad, never to Files. Everything else (documents, audio, zips) lands in Files under Downloads or iCloud Drive Downloads. Check Photos first; the transfer succeeded even when Files looks empty.

why does airdrop not see my device

Both sides need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, Personal Hotspot off, and matching visibility (Contacts Only vs Everyone). The classic failure is Contacts Only with mismatched Apple IDs. Flip the receiver to Everyone for 10 minutes to test; most pairings work immediately after.
