Where Does AltTab Store Settings on Mac?

AltTab keeps preferences in ~/Library/Preferences/com.lwouis.alt-tab-macos.plist on Mac, managed via defaults.

Last updated

AltTab uses standard macOS preferences. Settings live in a plist under Library Preferences with the bundle id in the name. There is no separate JSON or scattering across support folders.

Back up that one file and you keep window switcher layout, shortcuts and appearance. The app also keeps license and usage plists beside it, but those matter less. Edit through the app UI or the defaults command, not a text editor.

Where AltTab stores this, by platform

macOS
~/Library/Preferences/com.lwouis.alt-tab-macos.plist

Main preferences file. Support files and caches sit under the same bundle id in Application Support and Caches. Copy with AltTab quit, or use defaults export and import.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move AltTab settings to a new Mac?

Use defaults export to write the plist to a file, copy it over, then defaults import on the new Mac. Quit AltTab first on both ends. Launch it once after import to confirm the layout.

Can I just copy the plist file?

Yes for direct copies, but the defaults export and import pair is safer. It goes through macOS preferences instead of raw file copy. Raw copies can clash with cached prefs while the app runs.
