Where Does ALVR Store Session Config?
Where ALVR keeps session.json, presets and logs for wireless PCVR streaming.
Last updated
ALVR centers on one file: session.json. It holds server settings, client connection records and the OpenVR bits the driver needs. On Windows portable builds it sits right in the ALVR folder next to the dashboard exe. On Linux it follows the XDG config home.
Logs land nearby as session_log.txt (cleared per client connect) plus a persistent crash log. The dashboard presets folder is the only other piece worth backing up.
Where ALVR stores this, by platform
<ALVR folder>\session.json
Portable layout. session.json, session_log.txt and the presets folder sit beside ALVR Dashboard.exe. Deleting session.json while closed resets everything. Back up the presets folder with it.
~/.config/alvr/session.json
XDG config path. Logs go to ~/alvr_session_log.txt by default. Override either with ALVR_CONFIG_DIR or ALVR_LOG_DIR if you package it yourself.
Frequently asked questions
ALVR streaming broke after an update. How do I reset settings?
Close ALVR and delete session.json in the install folder (or ~/.config/alvr on Linux). It regenerates with defaults on next launch. Your headset then pairs fresh, which fixes most stuck bitrate or codec states.
How do I move ALVR settings to another PC?
Copy session.json to the new machine after installing the same ALVR version, then adjust the client connection entries. Presets under the presets folder travel the same way.
