Where Does Ancestris Store Genealogy Data?
Ancestris GEDCOM files, settings and backups in the user folder.
Last updated
Ancestris works directly on GEDCOM files you keep, so the family tree lives wherever you saved the .ged file. Settings, plugins and window layouts sit in the Ancestris user directory beside it.
That file first design makes backups obvious: copy the GEDCOM (plus its media folder) and the research travels anywhere. The app writes backups of its own on save when configured. Unlike database bound tools, moving machines means moving files, nothing more.
Where Ancestris stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\.ancestris (settings) plus your .ged files wherever saved
Keep GEDCOMs in Documents with media beside them. Copy both for a full move. Settings and plugin state restore by copying the user directory with the app closed.
~/.ancestris (settings) plus your .ged files wherever saved
Same file based model on Mac. Version the GEDCOM with Time Machine or git for history; the format diffs cleanly enough for meaningful commits.
~/.ancestris (settings) plus your .ged files wherever saved
Same layout on Linux. Back up the GEDCOM plus media folder together; paths inside are relative when kept beside the file.
Frequently asked questions
where is my Ancestris family tree file
Exactly where you saved the .ged file, usually Documents. The app never hides it in a database. Search the drive for *.ged if the open recent list lost track of it.
how do I back up Ancestris
Copy the GEDCOM and its media folder to external storage or cloud. Export a second copy periodically; the plain text format opens in any genealogy tool if Ancestris ever goes away.
