Where Are Android Private Space Files Stored?

Private Space files live in a separate locked Android profile, with moved files landing in the private Downloads folder.

Last updated

Private Space is not a hidden folder. It is a separate Android user profile with its own encryption keys, tied to the space lock. Apps installed there start fresh, with no data copied from the main profile.

Files follow the same isolation. The supported move is through the Add files shortcut in the space container, which copies or moves into the private Downloads folder. Raw paths under /data/user exist, but they stay encrypted until you unlock the space, so the UI route is the practical one.

System managed move target. Use the Add files flow in the unlocked space. Locking the space stops its apps and hides its files from the main profile.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move files into Private Space?

Unlock Private Space in the app drawer, tap Add, then Add files. Pick files from main storage and choose Copy or Move. Copies land in the private Downloads folder.

Does a phone backup include Private Space?

No. Private Space is excluded from device backups. Reinstalls and new phones start empty. App level cloud sync inside the space is the only way to carry data over.

Can I share files out of Private Space?

Yes, while unlocked. A Private tab appears in the share sheet, photo picker, and documents UI. Lock the space to hide those entries again.
