Android finds ringtones by folder, not by settings import. Audio files placed in Ringtones appear in the call sound picker, Alarms in the clock picker, Notifications in the notification picker. No registration step exists.
The folders live at shared storage root with SD card mirrors honored. Subfolders organize without breaking detection. Deleting a file in use falls back to defaults silently, which explains mysterious resets after cleanups.
