Where Are Apple Books Stored on Mac?
Where Apple Books keeps Store purchases and your own imports on Mac, and how the iPhone library syncs instead.
Last updated
Apple Books on Mac splits storage in two. Purchases from the Book Store hide in a BKAgentService container folder. Epubs and PDFs you added yourself live in an iCloud Drive folder with a tilde-filled name that Finder refuses to navigate normally.
The iPhone keeps no visible folder at all. Its library sits in the app sandbox and syncs through iCloud when enabled. That split explains the classic confusion: the Mac shows files to copy, while the phone only shows books to read. On the Mac, only the iCloud Books folder accepts new files by copy; the Store container is strictly hands-off.
Where Apple Books stores this, by platform
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks
Store purchases land here as encrypted files. Do not add your own books to this folder; they belong in the iCloud Books path. Reach it with Go to Folder since Finder hides Library. Back it up as part of the whole Library container.
~/Library/Mobile Documents/iCloud~com~apple~iBooks/Documents
Epubs and PDFs you imported yourself sync here through iCloud Drive. Copy new books into this folder to add them to the library. The path contains a space and tildes, so quote it or escape it in Terminal.
Books app library (synced via iCloud)
No user-accessible folder exists on iOS: the library lives in the app sandbox. Enable Books under iCloud Drive syncing to move books between devices. Anything bought or imported on Mac appears here once sync runs.
Frequently asked questions
why are there two Books folders on Mac
Books bought from Apple live in the BKAgentService container, while files you added yourself live in the iCloud Books folder. Finder redirects the iCloud path oddly, so open both through Terminal or Go to Folder. Only the added-books folder accepts new files by copy.
how do I sync Books between iPhone and Mac
Turn on Books under iCloud Drive syncing on every device with the same Apple ID. Purchases, imports, positions, and highlights then follow you. On Mac, also enable collections and highlights sync inside the Books app General settings.
can I browse book files on iPhone
No. The iOS library lives in the app sandbox with no user-browsable folder. Manage books inside the Books app or through iCloud sync to a Mac. Export a specific PDF through the share sheet when you need the file itself.
