Where Does Strongbox Store Databases and Settings?
Strongbox keeps your KeePass databases wherever you put them, with only settings and caches in its iOS container.
Last updated
Strongbox never takes custody of your password database. The .kdbx file stays where you placed it: iCloud Drive, Files, a USB stick, anywhere. The app holds settings, favorites and cached credentials locally.
That design makes reinstalls painless and also unforgiving. Wiping the app loses nothing except preferences, but losing the database file itself leaves Strongbox with nothing to open.
Where Strongbox stores this, by platform
Files > Strongbox
Strongbox can store databases in its Files folder, though iCloud Drive or another provider works the same. App settings live in the sealed container. Re-adding the database file after reinstall restores everything.
~/Library/Containers/com.markiv.Strongbox-mac/Data
Sandbox container with preferences and caches. Databases stay in user chosen locations. Copying the container migrates settings, never the passwords themselves.
Frequently asked questions
where should i keep my strongbox database file
In iCloud Drive or another synced folder you control, outside the app container. That way reinstalls and new devices only need the file re-added, with no data trapped in the old install.
will deleting strongbox delete my passwords
Only if the sole database copy lived inside the app container. Databases in iCloud Drive or Files survive untouched. Confirm where the .kdbx sits before deleting.
