Where Is Apple Health Data Stored?
Apple Health keeps its database in a private system area with no Files path, plus exports and encrypted backups.
Last updated
Health data lives in a private database outside user reach. There is no folder to open in Files and no document to copy. The system exposes it exclusively through HealthKit, one permission prompt at a time.
Portability comes from two official routes. In-app export writes the full archive as XML. Device backups carry the database only when encrypted (computer) or with Health enabled (iCloud). Miss that setting and years of data stay on the old phone.
Where Apple Health stores this, by platform
/var/mobile/Library/Health (private, no direct access)
Private HealthKit database with no user-visible path. Export from the profile screen. Encrypted backups are the only full backup. Filename details vary by iOS version.
Frequently asked questions
How do I export Apple Health data?
Open your profile picture in Health and use Export All Health Data. That produces a ZIP of XML plus CSVs. Third-party apps cannot offer more than this file contains.
How do I back up Apple Health?
Use an encrypted computer backup or iCloud with Health toggled on. Unencrypted backups skip Health entirely. That single checkbox decides whether history survives.
Can other apps read the Health database file?
No. The database is system-private and unreadable to other apps. Apps exchange data through HealthKit permissions only. Direct file access needs a jailbreak and voids the point.
