Where Does Armbian Store Config Files?

The Armbian boot environment file, first-boot presets, and network config locations on ARM boards.

Last updated

Armbian keeps board boot settings in one small text file on the boot partition, armbianEnv.txt. Overlays, verbosity, and root device all live there, and armbian-config edits it for you when you would rather not hand edit.

First boot answers sit separately in /root/.not_logged_in_yet, and networking follows modern netplan under /etc/netplan. Touch those three and you have covered nearly every headless setup question Armbian users ask.

Where Armbian stores this, by platform

Linux
/boot/armbianEnv.txt

Boot environment on the boot partition: overlays, verbosity, rootdev. Edit with armbian-config or nano directly. First-boot presets live in /root/.not_logged_in_yet and network config under /etc/netplan.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enable a device tree overlay on Armbian?

Add it to the overlays line in /boot/armbianEnv.txt, either by hand or through armbian-config, then reboot. A typo here is the most common cause of a board that suddenly stops booting.

Where are Armbian first-boot answers stored?

In /root/.not_logged_in_yet, with preset variables for user, password, and Wi-Fi. It runs once after first login, alongside /root/provisioning.sh for custom setup.
