Where Does DietPi Store Config and User Data?

The DietPi first-boot config, board settings, user data mount, and backup locations on a running system.

Last updated

DietPi splits its state across a small FAT boot partition and the main Linux filesystem, which confuses anyone expecting one config directory. Automation and Wi-Fi credentials live on the boot side so you can edit them from any PC before first boot.

Day to day data lands under /mnt/dietpi_userdata, and backups go wherever you point dietpi-backup. Learn those three spots and the rest of the system is just standard Debian.

Where DietPi stores this, by platform

Linux
/boot/dietpi.txt

First-boot automation file on the boot partition, with /boot/dietpi-wifi.txt beside it for wireless credentials. Board specifics live in /boot/dietpiEnv.txt or config.txt depending on hardware. User data defaults to /mnt/dietpi_userdata, and dietpi-backup targets a directory you choose with settings in /boot/dietpi/.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set Wi-Fi before first boot on DietPi?

Edit /boot/dietpi.txt and /boot/dietpi-wifi.txt from any computer that can read the SD card's boot partition. The system applies them automatically on first start.

Where did my DietPi downloads and service data go?

Check /mnt/dietpi_userdata first. DietPi redirects software data there by default, and the mount can be moved to external storage through dietpi-drive_manager.
