Where Are Ashen Save Files Located?

Ashen saves sit in AppData\Local\Ashen\Saved\SaveGames on PC, while the Microsoft Store build hides them in its package folder.

Last updated

The standard PC version of Ashen uses a plain Unreal style tree: saves in SaveGames, settings in Config next to it. One folder copy backs up both, which is all most players need.

The Microsoft Store version refuses to play along. Its saves live inside the app package container under SystemAppData/wgs with scrambled names. Never mix files between the two editions; neither client accepts the other's format.

Where Ashen stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Ashen\Saved\SaveGames

Steam, GOG and Epic copies. Config sits beside it at Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor. Back up the whole Saved folder with the game closed.

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\AnnapurnaInteractive.Ashen_c96c51jf6wkvm\SystemAppData\wgs

Microsoft Store and Game Pass edition. Files use scrambled container names, so copy the entire wgs folder rather than individual saves.

Linux
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/649950/pfx/

Proton prefix, app ID 649950. The Ashen Saved tree is mirrored inside drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local.

Frequently asked questions

how do i back up ashen saves on steam

Copy %LOCALAPPDATA%\Ashen\Saved to another drive with the game closed. Pasting it back to the same path restores progress and graphics settings together.

can i move an ashen save from game pass to steam

Not by copying files. The Store version uses containerized wgs data while Steam uses plain SaveGames files. Finish the run on one edition or start fresh on the other.
