Where Does Autodesk Inventor Store Projects and Templates?

Where Autodesk Inventor keeps projects, templates, and settings on Windows, and which file matters most.

Last updated

Inventor revolves around the project file. The .ipj defines where templates, libraries, and workspace files resolve. Your models can sit anywhere, but without the .ipj the links break. Default templates live under Public Documents Autodesk Inventor, while per user settings sit in AppData Roaming.

Content Center and Design Data deserve attention during upgrades. They are versioned, so a 2024 library opened in 2025 wants a migration step. Point new installs at a copied library instead of the old live one. That way a failed migration does not take down the whole team share.

Where Autodesk Inventor stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 20XX

Default templates and Design Data live here. Per user settings are under %appdata%\Autodesk\Autodesk Inventor 20XX. Your active paths are shown inside the Projects dialog for the open .ipj.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move an Inventor project to another computer?

The .ipj project file is the map. Copy the whole project folder with the .ipj at its root, then open the .ipj on the new PC before opening parts. Without it, Inventor guesses at content center and library paths and usually guesses wrong.

Where are Inventor templates stored?

Open Projects, then look at Folder Options for the active .ipj. Templates, Design Data, and Content Center files each list a path. Defaults sit under Public Documents and AppData, but most firms redirect them to a server. The .ipj wins over any default.
