Where Does Barrier Store Config and Certificates?

Barrier keeps its screen layout in .barrier.conf and TLS certs in an SSL folder, under ~/.local/share/barrier on Linux.

Last updated

Barrier stores layout and trust apart. The screen arrangement lives in .barrier.conf at the profile root. Certificates and fingerprint lists live in the SSL subfolder. Lose the second half and connections fail closed.

Paths shift per install type: native packages, Snaps, and macOS builds each nest the profile differently. Check the log line naming the fingerprint path on startup. That line never lies about where your install looks.

Where Barrier stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Barrier\barrier.sgc + SSL

Screen layout plus SSL certs and fingerprint lists. GUI writes it, headless servers read it with --config.

Linux
~/.local/share/barrier

Profile root with .barrier.conf and SSL/. Snap installs nest it under ~/snap/barrier*/. Check logs for the exact path.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/barrier

Same profile layout as Linux under Application Support. Fingerprint trust files work identically across OSes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Barrier to a new machine?

Copy .barrier.conf plus the SSL folder to the same relative path. Fingerprints travel in Fingerprints/Local.txt and TrustedServers.txt. Regenerate certs instead if trust errors appear.

Barrier rejects the server fingerprint. Why?

Open SSL/Fingerprints/Local.txt on the server and compare with what the client shows. Mismatches mean a stale cert. Regenerate Barrier.pem on both sides and re-trust.

How do I run Barrier headless without the GUI?

Create SSL/Fingerprints under the profile dir and generate Barrier.pem with openssl plus a Local.txt fingerprint. The wiki command-line page lists the exact commands per OS.
