Where Does BetterTouchTool Store Presets and Settings?
BetterTouchTool stores presets and auto-backups in ~/Library/Application Support/BetterTouchTool, plus one plist for prefs.
Last updated
BetterTouchTool splits its state in two. The triggers, gestures and floating menus live as files in ~/Library/Application Support/BetterTouchTool. Plain preferences sit in com.hegenberg.BetterTouchTool.plist under ~/Library/Preferences.
For a full migration, copy the Application Support folder and the plist together. BTT also drops versioned auto-backups into that same folder on each update. Those are what the in-app restore menu offers you, and they have saved more setups than any manual export.
Where BetterTouchTool stores this, by platform
~/Library/Application Support/BetterTouchTool
Open it via Finder > Go > Go to Folder (include the ~). This folder holds the live preset database plus automatic version backups. Copy it with BTT quit, or the restore will not stick.
Frequently asked questions
How do I restore a BetterTouchTool backup?
Use the menu bar icon: Help > Restore Settings From Backup. BTT writes a backup there on every version update, so pick one with a sensible modification date and let it do the restore.
Can I restore the folder from Time Machine by hand?
Yes, but quit BetterTouchTool first or the running copy overwrites your restored files on exit. Copy the folder back with BTT not running, then launch it.
