Where Does BlenderKit Store Downloaded Assets?
BlenderKit downloads models and materials into a global blenderkit_data folder in your home directory. Paths for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Last updated
BlenderKit caches every downloaded asset in a global directory called blenderkit_data, sitting directly in your home folder. It also holds the client binary, its logs and thumbnails. One global copy saves disk when several projects share the same model.
You can change the location under Edit > Preferences > Add-ons > BlenderKit > File Paths. The Use Directories setting decides whether downloads also land in a subdirectory next to the current .blend file. That second copy is what makes a project portable to a render farm. Check Runtime Info in the same preferences panel to see the paths your install actually uses.
Where BlenderKit stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[Username]\blenderkit_data
Global asset cache, client binary and logs. If the client won't start, run blendkit-client from client\bin inside this folder once by hand so the OS remembers the permission.
~/blenderkit_data
Same global directory role as Windows. The add-on itself installs under ~/Library/Application Support/Blender/<version>/scripts/addons, which is a different folder.
~/blenderkit_data
Same home-folder default. Point Global Directory at a bigger drive in the add-on preferences if your home partition is small. Antivirus write-blocks here are the usual cause of failed downloads.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move the BlenderKit download folder?
Open Blender preferences, go to the BlenderKit add-on, and set Global Directory under File Paths. Restart Blender afterwards. Move or redownload existing assets, since old projects still reference the previous location.
Why do my BlenderKit assets break when I move a project?
Global mode stores assets outside the project folder. Switch Use Directories to Global and Subdirectory so each .blend keeps local copies. Then compress the project folder with its asset subdirectory to transfer everything.
