Where Are Borderlands 2 Save Files Located?
Borderlands 2 saves per Steam ID under WillowGame/SaveData. The Windows, Mac, and Linux paths.
Last updated
Borderlands 2 stores characters as Save0001.sav style files in a SaveData folder with one numbered subfolder per Steam ID. On Windows that is Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData\<steam-id>. The number folder is your account, not a backup slot.
Mac builds use ~/Library/Application Support/Borderlands 2/WillowGame/SaveData with the same inner layout. Linux (Aspyr) uses ~/.local/share/aspyr-media/borderlands 2/willowgame/savedata. Do not confuse the documents copy with the WillowGame folder inside the install dir; the game files twin has no saves.
Where Borderlands 2 stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData
Steam ID subfolder inside holds SaveXXXX.sav plus profile.bin. OneDrive moved Documents break old guides; open Documents itself rather than typing C: paths.
~/Library/Application Support/Borderlands 2/WillowGame/SaveData
Same Steam ID inner folder. Copy the ID folder across from Windows to migrate; characters transfer cleanly between the two.
~/.local/share/aspyr-media/borderlands 2/willowgame/savedata
Aspyr port layout in lowercase. Same ID folder convention. .sav files share the extension with other games, so migrate by folder, not by association.
Frequently asked questions
how do i import a downloaded borderlands 2 save
Drop the SaveXXXX.sav into your Steam ID folder inside SaveData. Pick a free slot number to avoid overwriting your characters. The game lists it on next launch with no conversion step.
why is there no savedata folder in my borderlands 2 install
You are looking at the game files copy of WillowGame. Saves live in the documents side twin, not the install dir. Search the disk for SaveData to land on the right one.
