Where Does Bruno Store Collections?

Bruno's Documents collections root with .bru files plus where app prefs live.

Last updated

Bruno inverts the Postman model by storing collections as plain files first. New collections default under a bruno folder in Documents, each one a directory of .bru request files plus bruno.json and environments.

That makes Git the sync layer. Commit the folder and every request, assertion and variable travels with the repo, while app prefs stay in Electron storage outside version control.

Where Bruno stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\bruno

Default collections root, changeable in Preferences > General. App settings ride in Electron Store. CLI via bru run works off the same folders.

macOS
~/Documents/bruno

Same layout with .bru files, environments folder and collection.bru defaults. Point teammates at the repo copy instead of exporting.

Linux
~/Documents/bruno

Same layout. Secrets stay out of the files by design, so wire Vault or env vars rather than pasting tokens into requests.

Frequently asked questions

How do I share Bruno collections with a team?

Commit the collection folder to Git. The .bru format diffs cleanly, so pull requests review API changes like code.

Where are Bruno environments stored?

In environments/ below each collection as .bru files. Keep Local versus Prod values in separate files and out of screenshots.
