Where Does Thunder Client Store Collections?
Thunder Client VS Code extension storage on each OS, plus the workspace folder that holds shared collections.
Last updated
Thunder Client stores data in two places. Personal state lives in the VS Code global storage folder for the rangav.vs-thunder-client extension. Each OS puts that folder under its VS Code user data root. Workspace collections live separately.
Shared requests sit in a thunder-tests folder at the workspace root. That folder holds thunder-collection.json with requests and a separate environment file. Commit it to git to share with a team. The global folder is per machine and should stay out of repos.
Where Thunder Client stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Code\User\globalStorage\rangav.vs-thunder-client
Extension state for the current VS Code profile. Insiders and VSCodium use parallel roots with the same suffix. Deleting it resets history but keeps workspace collections.
~/.config/Code/User/globalStorage/rangav.vs-thunder-client
Same rangav.vs-thunder-client suffix under each platform Code root. Linux uses ~/.config/Code, macOS uses ~/Library/Application Support/Code. Workspace file is separate.
~/Library/Application Support/Code/User/globalStorage/rangav.vs-thunder-client
Same extension suffix under the macOS Code root. VSCodium uses ~/Library/Application Support/VSCodium instead. Workspace thunder-tests folder holds the shareable collections.
Frequently asked questions
how do i share Thunder Client requests with my team
Commit the thunder-tests folder at the repo root, including thunder-collection.json and thunder-environment.json. Teammates opening the same folder get the requests automatically. Gitignore the global storage folder.
can i back up Thunder Client without syncing all of VS Code
Yes. The global storage folder keeps request history and app state per VS Code profile. The workspace thunder-tests folder keeps the actual collections. Back up the workspace folder, not the global one.
