Where Are Windows Servicing and Repair Logs?
Windows logs servicing and repair operations in CBS.log, the first file support asks for after SFC or DISM.
Last updated
Every SFC scan, DISM repair, and Windows Update servicing operation writes to CBS.log. It is the diary of everything Windows has fixed, or failed to fix, about itself.
The file grows fast and reads terribly in Notepad, which is why support always asks for a filtered copy. Persistent leftovers and CheckSUR artifacts sit next to it for update-specific failures. When servicing breaks, this folder has the answer and Event Viewer only has the headline.
Where Windows stores this, by platform
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
Servicing log plus persist archives and CheckSUR files. Copy it elsewhere before filtering; the live file stays locked. Admin rights required to browse.
Frequently asked questions
CBS.log is enormous. How do I read it?
Run findstr /c:"[SR]" against a copy of CBS.log. That filters the millions of lines down to the actual repair verdicts and corrupted files.
