Where Does Choosenim Store Toolchains?

Choosenim installs Nim toolchains into ~/.choosenim with a shims folder that belongs on PATH.

Last updated

Choosenim keeps every Nim version in its own toolchain folder under ~/.choosenim, switching between them by rewriting shims. The current selection persists in a small state file.

Disk use grows per version kept, which is normal for toolchain managers. Removing a toolchain folder for a retired version only forces a reinstall if some project still selects it.

Where Choosenim stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.choosenim

Toolchains plus current version marker. Add ~/.nimble/bin to PATH for installed packages. Switch with choosenim stable without touching folders by hand.

macOS
~/.choosenim

Same layout on Mac. Homebrew Nim installs coexist but ignore choosenim switching, so pick one manager per shell.

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\.choosenim

Same tree on Windows. The installer offers to set PATH for the shims automatically.

Frequently asked questions

how do i free disk space used by choosenim

Delete retired toolchain folders under ~/.choosenim/toolchains. Projects pinned to a removed version prompt for reinstall on next build.

where do nimble packages go

Into ~/.nimble by default, separate from choosenim toolchains. That folder survives toolchain switches untouched.
