Where Does vfox Store Tool Versions and Config?
vfox downloads toolchains into a .version-fox folder in your home directory, with version pins living in each project instead.
Last updated
vfox keeps a clean split. The tools themselves (Node, Python, Java builds and their caches) live in a .version-fox folder in your home directory on every OS. Which version each project uses lives in small .vfox.toml files inside the projects.
That split is why reinstalls are painless. Delete the home folder to reclaim disk, keep the toml files, and vfox re-downloads exact versions on next use. Override the location with VFOX_HOME if home is cramped or lives on a small system drive.
Where vfox stores this, by platform
~/.version-fox
Downloaded toolchains, plugin data, and caches. Override with the VFOX_HOME variable. Project pins live in per-project .vfox.toml files, not here.
~/.version-fox
Same folder name as Linux. Shell hook lives in your zsh or bash profile; the tools themselves stay in this directory.
%USERPROFILE%\.version-fox
Same role as the Unix dot-folder. Set VFOX_HOME to move it, e.g. onto a larger drive, before installing toolchains.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move the vfox tool cache?
Set the VFOX_HOME environment variable to the new location before installing anything. Existing tools need a reinstall into the fresh directory.
How do I fully uninstall vfox?
Remove the shell hook line vfox added to your profile file, then delete the .version-fox folder. Project .vfox.toml pins are plain text and can stay or go.
