Where Does ClearURLs Store Rules and Settings?

ClearURLs keeps its rules and settings in per-profile browser extension storage, with export for moves.

Last updated

ClearURLs stores settings and custom rules in extension storage inside the active profile. The built-in filter list updates itself; your toggles and exceptions are the personal part.

New profiles start protected with defaults, so nothing urgent breaks. Custom rules for odd sites need the export file. That file is small plain text worth keeping with dotfiles.

Where ClearURLs stores this, by platform

Windows
%LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions (per profile)

Rules and settings per profile. Export from options before wiping. Built-in lists update themselves after import, so the file mainly rescues custom rules.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Extensions (per profile)

Same model on Mac across Chromium and Firefox builds. Firefox keeps it under ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles. Prefer export over folder copies.

Linux
~/.config/google-chrome/Default/Extensions (per profile)

Chromium profiles under ~/.config and Firefox under ~/.mozilla. Same export workflow. Rules apply per request with no local log to rotate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move ClearURLs settings to a new browser?

Open the options page and export settings to a file, then import on the new profile. Custom rules and badges travel in that file. Built-in rules refresh from updates on their own.

Do ClearURLs rules sync between profiles?

No. Each profile holds its own copy in extension storage. The export file is the migration path. Fresh installs protect immediately with default rules either way.
