Where Does Dark Reader Store Themes and Site Lists?

Dark Reader keeps themes and site lists in per-profile browser extension storage, with export for moves.

Last updated

Dark Reader lives inside each browser profile. Theme mode, brightness, per-site toggles, and custom fixes sit in extension storage under the profile folder. There is no standalone data directory.

New profiles start in default dark mode even on the same machine. That surprises people who tuned dozens of sites. The settings export is the reliable move, and it works across browser families that support the extension.

Where Dark Reader stores this, by platform

Windows
%LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions (per profile)

Extension storage per profile. Export from settings before wiping the browser. Site list and theme tweaks move with the file, not with bookmarks.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Extensions (per profile)

Same model on Mac, including Safari and Firefox builds. Firefox profiles keep it under ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles. Prefer export over file copying.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Dark Reader settings to a new browser?

Open the extension settings and export to a file, then import on the new profile. Theme tweaks and custom site toggles ride along. Dynamic-theme fixes refresh from updates automatically.

Does browser sync carry Dark Reader settings?

Partly. Built-in sync covers basic settings when enabled, but the file export is the complete route. It includes per-site fixes and custom CSS that sync sometimes skips.
