Where Does Commento Store Comments?

Commento keeps comments in Postgres and config in a TOML file on Linux. Uploads are minimal by design.

Last updated

Commento is stateless on disk. The server reads commento.toml or environment variables on startup, then stores everything in Postgres. That makes backup simple: one database plus one config file.

Some installs also keep a small static override folder for custom CSS. Logs go to stdout under systemd or Docker. For restore, the database dump matters most. The TOML file matters next. Keep SMTP settings in the same backup, since password resets and notifications stop without a working mail sender. Test mail delivery after restore, since origin checks fail silently with a mismatched domain.

Where Commento stores this, by platform

Linux
/etc/commento/commento.toml

Main config file with database URL, origin, and mail settings. Lives beside the binary or in /etc/commento. Back it up with database dumps.

Linux
Postgres database (commento)

All comments, users, and settings. Dump with pg_dump on a schedule. Restore into an empty database of the same Postgres version.

Frequently asked questions

how do i migrate commento

Dump Postgres, then copy commento.toml to the new host. Restore the dump before starting Commento. Update the origin and SMTP values if the domain changed.

where are commento comments stored

Comment text, users, and moderation state live in Postgres. There is no per site export folder to copy. Use pg_dump for full backup and keep the config file with it.
