Where Does Courier MTA Store Config and Queues?

Courier mail server config in /etc/courier plus spool, auth and filter data on Linux.

Last updated

Courier keeps one config file per daemon under /etc/courier. Queues live in /var/spool/courier with control files beside messages.

Auth data comes from authdaemon configs plus userdb or LDAP. Backing up means copying etc plus spool plus user data together. Single file edits need a Courier restart.

Where Courier MTA stores this, by platform

Linux
/etc/courier/

Main config home (esmtpd, imapd, pop3d, authdaemonrc, aliases). Spool is /var/spool/courier/ with msgq, msgs and filters. User mail often in Maildirs under home or /var/mail.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Courier queue?

Under /var/spool/courier in msgq and msgs with control files. Healthy queues drain fast. Copy config and user data for migration, not transient queue entries.

Which Courier files do I back up?

The full /etc/courier tree plus userdb, aliases and TLS certs, plus mail storage. Auth settings in authdaemonrc decide which user backend matters. Validate with courier check after edits.
