Where Does Cryptomator Store Vaults and Settings?
Cryptomator vaults live wherever you created them, while app settings sit in a small platform folder you can safely reset.
Last updated
A Cryptomator vault is just a folder with encrypted files and a masterkey file, sitting wherever you put it: Dropbox, a USB stick, anywhere. The app remembers vault locations but owns none of them.
Settings are the only thing in Cryptomator's own folder, and deleting it merely forgets preferences and the vault list. Your vaults unlock again by re-adding their folders, password permitting.
Where Cryptomator stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Cryptomator\settings.json
Preferences and remembered vault paths. Vault contents stay in their own folders wherever you created them. Re-adding a vault folder after a reset restores access with the same password.
~/Library/Application Support/Cryptomator/settings.json
Same split: settings here, vaults elsewhere. The masterkey file inside each vault folder is required alongside the password, so back up vault folders whole.
~/.config/Cryptomator/settings.json
Same arrangement. Never separate a vault's masterkey file from its encrypted d directory; one without the other is unreadable.
Frequently asked questions
how do i back up cryptomator vaults
Copy the entire vault folder, masterkey file included, like any directory. The password stays in your head, so losing it loses everything regardless of backups.
cryptomator forgot my vaults after reinstalling
Re-add each vault with Add Existing Vault and point at its folder. The vault list in settings.json is convenience only; the folders themselves are intact.
is it safe to delete the cryptomator settings folder
Yes. It holds preferences and the vault list, nothing cryptographic. Vaults unlock again once re-added, assuming passwords and masterkey files survived.
