Where Does VeraCrypt Store Config and History?

VeraCrypt keeps settings, favorite volumes, and mount history as XML files in %APPDATA% on Windows, beside the exe in portable mode.

Last updated

VeraCrypt separates volumes from their metadata. Your encrypted containers live wherever you created them. Settings land in small XML files: Configuration.xml for preferences, Favorite Volumes.xml for saved slots, History.xml for recent paths, plus keyfile defaults.

Installed mode puts those in %APPDATA%\VeraCrypt. Portable mode keeps them next to the exe, which suits USB use. None of these files are encrypted themselves, so the history list deserves a thought on shared machines.

Where VeraCrypt stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\VeraCrypt

Configuration.xml, Favorite Volumes.xml, History.xml, Default Keyfiles.xml. Portable mode relocates them next to the exe. History can be disabled in Settings.

Linux
~/.VeraCrypt

Same XML set in a home dot-folder. Confirm exact casing on your distro; portable builds keep them beside the binary like on Windows.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate VeraCrypt settings to a new PC?

Copy Configuration.xml, Favorite Volumes.xml, and Default Keyfiles.xml to the same folder on the new PC. Volume passwords are never stored, so keep those separately.

How do I stop VeraCrypt saving mount history?

Enable Never save history in Settings, then delete History.xml. The list only records attempted paths, but on shared machines even that leaks intent.
